Interactive Metronome® (IM) is an evidence-based training program and assessment tool. It uses a structured, rhythmic training system to strengthen the brain’s internal timing mechanisms, which are foundational for focus, learning, motor planning, and self-regulation.

A little history
Interactive Metronome® was developed in the early 1990s and immediately proved of great benefit to children diagnosed with learning and developmental disorders. Over the years, clinical research and therapeutic practice have shown that IM is also beneficial for the rehabilitation of adults following stroke, brain injury, a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease, or other neurological disorders. IM has more than 40 published peer-reviewed research studies and white papers to date.
Backed by prominent leaders in the medical industry, IM has gained national attention as a breakthrough intervention to help clients increase attention and concentration, motor control and coordination, language processing, and control of impulsivity.
Today there are more than 40,000 certified IM Providers in over 60 countries, and the intervention has helped more than 1 million clients achieve their therapy goals.
How IM Affects the Brain
The Interactive Metronome® (IM) is an evidence-based, engaging therapeutic modality used by professionals who work with pediatric and adult patients with neurological conditions that affect cognitive and motor functioning. IM is both an assessment and treatment tool and has shown improvements across the following areas of the brain:

Evidence-based training
IM challenges clients to synchronize a range of whole-body exercises to a beat. A score is provided in milliseconds. IM’s game-like features engage the client with auditory and visual guidance and provide real-time feedback, encouraging them to improve their scores.

Patty Leavens is pleased to be joining Osteopathic Medical Associates, PLLC in the role of Certified Interactive Metronome Technician. She enjoys learning about the brain and increasing neural pathways. As a mom of five children, she is intrigued by the various ways each person’s brain development shapes their unique life experience. She enjoys listening to podcasts and reading books about child development, neurodivergence, and wellness topics.
Before becoming a parent, Patty worked for the DuPont Company in different administrative roles. Her attention to detail, life experience, and compassion will benefit those who are looking to strengthen their neural pathways. Patty is looking forward to helping you and your family members reach your goals — whether they are developmental, academic, sports-related, or rehabilitative.
She lives in Thornton with her husband and children. She has recently started playing pickleball and is looking forward to improving her game through Interactive Metronome training sessions.
What to Expect
Each program begins with a comprehensive baseline assessment, where we measure timing and rhythmic accuracy. This allows us to individualize a training plan based on your specific needs.
Typical program structure
- Initial assessment (60 minutes)
- Baseline testing, goal setting, and introduction to the system.
- Training sessions (45–60 minutes each)
- Typically 2–3 sessions per week. Most programs run 4–6 weeks depending on goals. Real-time feedback and progressive challenges are used to build skills.
- Reassessment & progress review
- Objective comparison to baseline and a discussion of next steps.
